Spirit of Liberty

Unplanned Beaching

Yesterday October 6th 2019, a 51 ft Sailboat, Spirit of Liberty, lost power in a rough Northeasterner and could not sail out of trouble then ended up in Atlantic Beach. I went out before sunrise and with the help of the TV crew lighting up the boat from shore I got a few good pictures. I do feel bad for the owner.

 Ship Golden Ray Turns Over

September 2019 The Ship Holder Ray carrying 4200 Kias was leaving port with a list. The crew was going to take on ballast water in the ocean to even it out. A fire broke out on the ship and the harbor pilot decided to turn around and go back to port. As the ship turned it actually turned over on its side. Tugs moved it to a sand bar to free the shipping lane and to keep the ship from sinking deeper. The pictures were taken from St. Simon’s Island pier and lighthouse. The bottom side of the ship was photographed from the fishing pier on Jekyll Island. Ship is 565 ft long and over 100 ft high and wide.

Cooling Tower demo

2018 JEA brought down the cooling tower that was built in the 1980s for a nuclear reactor that was never built. The generating station went on line as a coal fire plant. As we become more efficient in burning energy due to gains in technology the energy plant is not needed anymore and will be decommissioned soon and the area will be made into a recreational park.

Barbary Coast Monkeys

2016 Linda and I went on a Meditterean cruise and stopped at Gilbralter. I did not know that the top of the rock had bunches of monkeys. They were very tame and well mannered.
